Born and raised in Detroit, Michael Brunker has always led with heart and purpose. After earning a degree in Political Science from the University of Detroit, he launched a 13-year coaching career—including four years at his alma mater and two with the NBA’s Detroit Pistons under ESPN’s Dick Vitale and seven at San Diego State University, mentoring legends like Tony Gwynn and Michael Cage.

In 1987, Michael made a life-changing decision: to leave coaching and stay in San Diego to serve the community. 

He has been a Rotarian since 1994, serving in various leadership roles, including Club President (2023-2024) of Rotary Club #33 – the 33rd oldest and 10th largest Rotary Club in the world. Michael’s vision has energized, inspired, and led to significant achievements such as the development of the "Re-Imagine San Diego Rotary Strategic Plan”. 

 Michael’s leadership extended beyond Rotary, having served as Executive Director Emeritus of the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA for over 20 years. He was instrumental in raising $34 million for the JRYMCA’s redevelopment, fostering crucial partnerships with organizations such as Major League Baseball, the San Diego Padres, and the state of California. His efforts culminated in the dedication of a basketball gymnasium named in his honor at the JRYMCA, a testament to his transformative impact on the community. 

As an advocate for youth sports, Michael has supported student-athletes through his leadership as volunteer Governor of the 15,000+ member Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) Pacific Southwest District since 1988. He also played a vital role in founding the San Diego Regional Police Athletic League in 1988. His contributions have been recognized with numerous awards, including the San Diego Rotary’s Mr. San Diego Award (2019), the YMCA of San Diego County's Martin Luther King Jr. Human Dignity Award (2018), and the UAAMAC Lifetime Achievement Award. 

In addition to his work with youth, Michael has built strong connections within the San Diego community, serving on advisory boards with San Diego Gas and Electric and the San Diego Union-Tribune, and nationally on the Amateur Athletic Union of the United States Board of Directors. 

Michael's actions consistently aim to better the lives of others, especially underserved youth and families. His leadership, both within Rotary and the wider San Diego community, exemplifies his commitment to making a lasting impact.

Michael and his wife Maria Elena are both from the Motor City and have five children and ten grandchildren.
